Radiological and mineralogical studies on the coastal area between Port-Said and Damietta

Abstract The study area constitutes the Eastern flank of Nile Delta between longitudes, 31° 39’ 9.2″–32° 20’ 9.6″ E and latitudes 37′13″-31° 0′ 54″N, in shoreline Port-Said Damietta. radioelement contents were measured by gamma-spectrometry using NaI-detector studied mineralogically binuclear Environmental Scanning Electron microscopes after separation heavy minerals liquids. eU, eTh, RaeU K sediments sabkhas are ranged from (1-2 ppm), (3-17 (1-4 ppm) (0.45-1.25 wt.%) with averages 1.34, 7.18, 1.89 ppm 0.77 wt.%, respectively. average is lower than international averages, while eTh/eU ratio higher. High reflects poor weathering, rapid deposition these dominance detrital radioactive such as xenotime, monazite zircon. eU/RaeU (0.9), unity indicate disequilibrium coastal sediments, suggesting uranium migration out. represented meanly magnetite, ilmenite, zircon, rutile, garnet, monazite, pyroxene amphibole.
